Invisible homelessness: How families end up living at hotels on the Space Coast

Families who can’t afford expensive move-in costs end up homeless, living in cheap hotels in Brevard County.

When Lamoine Hill moved to Florida from Ohio in 2016 with his girlfriend, Tyrenisha “Ty” Barnes, and two children, they were chasing warm weather and a fresh start.

But things got rocky in short order after their arrival in Brevard County. Squid Lips, the restaurant where Lamoine worked as a cook for $10 an hour, closed for almost two weeks after Hurricane Irma and he didn’t get paid.
